Twelve: Will Calver | New Paintings

October 6 - 16, 2022
Overview
155A Gallery is delighted to present a solo exhibition of new paintings by Will Calver this Autumn

Will Calver is a painter living and working in the Kentish countryside. His depictions of everyday objects aim to convey a sense of stillness and presence. The paintings are made from life, working from direct observation to study the interactions between light, forms and colour, and to express the intimacy that develops through spending time in the presence of the subject. From his studio, set among fruit trees and farmland, he is able to bear witness to the slow turning of the year, and this inspires a sense of naturalism in his work.

This collection of twelve paintings is a continuation of the artist’s exploration of the still life genre and an investigation of the relationship between objects, paint and temporality. Some of the paintings handle the theme of time more directly, featuring timepieces, candles, flowers and fruit, whilst others are more subtle. With influences ranging from seventeenth century vanitas and memento mori paintings to still life painting of the present day, the painter has aimed to create works that both speak of time and that are of a timeless quality.
