Working directly from the motif: doorways, windows, the figure in beautiful light; spatial shifts

and the compression of pattern are a recurring fascination. Objects that veil and interrupt

help me respond ‘unknowingly’ to reveal the beauty of edges touching edges and colour along

a line.

Kay Vinson grew up in Cornwall and studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL achieving

a first-class B.A. Honours Degree and M.A. in Painting. The Slade enabled her to work directly from the model under the tutelage of Euan Uglow, Patrick George and Norman Norris. This was a formative experience not so much for the

measuring systems but the idea of painting as a form of enquiry into how to remake sensations in their most powerful painted manifestation. Her awards have included the William Coldstream sessional prize for most promising

newcomer and The Rosa Morrison award for best female painter. Further awards on graduating included The Douglas Wolf award the Boise Travelling Scholarship to Russia,Italy and Istanbul. She is a two-time recipient of the Canadian Elizabeth Greenshield’s Foundation Award for figurative painting.

She has work in public and private collections including UCL and Jesus College Cambridge

and has exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, Millenium, St Ives and Penlee

House Penzance.

Kay has been a teacher and lecturer, part-time and has taught in London, Cornwall and

Italy.

Since 2005, she has lived and painted in Cornwall, raising her family.
